Bring the Family Together With a Smart Kitchen

March 22, 2016

A Connected Home Makes Meal Time Easier and More Memorable

For many, the kitchen is the heart of their Delray Beach home. It’s not just a place to cook your food; it’s where the entire family gathers to share stories about their day, catch up on old times and enjoy delicious meals. Today, a connected home, smart devices and apps can help you streamline your time in the kitchen so you can spend more of it enjoying the company of your friends and family. Not only that, but they can help you cook healthier meals, keep track of health and wellness and even track inventory to let you know when it’s time to buy some more milk. Read on to learn more.

A Smarter Kitchen

Years ago, if you wanted to look up a recipe, you would have to find the right book on the bookshelf or the correct card in a file. Today, a mere search on Google will bring up hundreds of recipes. The internet is changing the way we interact the with our food, and it’s making family time a lot easier.

After you’ve selected your recipe from Google or a convenient cooking app like Food Network in the Kitchen, it’s easy enough to begin preparing the meal. But you can also use apps on your phone or tablet to know nutrition facts about the food you’re eating (Fooducate), and to choose entertainment for the evening (Spotify for some music, Hulu for TV). You can even stream the audio to wireless speakers throughout your kitchen, so you don’t have to rely on the small native speakers on the device.

But if you’re prone to messiness when you’re cooking, you may want to invest in a wall-mounted tablet or voice control device. You’d still utilize your hands with a wall-mounted device, but the thin component would be able to clear the counters of cookbooks, televisions and other inessentials. A voice control system, like Amazon Echo, will allow you to command the connected devices in your home with just a few words.

Looking Forward

Of course, a real smart kitchen should do more than make searching for recipes, ideas and entertainment easier – it should make shopping easier too. At least, that’s the idea behind Samsung’s new Family Hub Smart Fridge.

While smart refrigerators have been popping up occasionally — usually featuring LCD touch screens that simplify family communication and shopping list creation — Samsung’s version claims to completely change the game. It uses internal cameras to keep track of how much food is in the fridge, expiration dates and other important data that you can access remotely. Essentially, you’ll never have to wonder about how many eggs you have again.

Plus, the company has developed an app called Groceries that allows you to do your shopping online then delivers it to your doorstep.

At the moment, the Samsung family Hub may be priced out of reach for the average consumer, but that’s the great thing about the current technology boom: it’s only a matter of time before the smart refrigerator is revolutionizing your kitchen.
